I got my autographed copy in the mail yesterday, and I read through it for the first time today. I definitely think this is a graphic novel that will take more than one reading to fully experience.

I don't know if saying I "liked" Something Animal is the right way to put it. I felt more like a voyeur peeking into someone's fall into insanity/loss of self. However, Jack is simultaneously sympathetic and very disturbing.

The artwork is very angular and long, but it fits the dark storyline very well.

And looking at my previous comment I can see where I was interrupted by a phone call and lost my train of thought.

The cyclical story telling in Something Animal is extremely well done, IMO. Rereading the graphic novel is even more heartrending when you know what the end result is for Jack. I picked up a lot more of the text blended into the artwork on the second read as well.

The scenes with Dwayne made me want to cry. The subtle art shift between normal Jack and the new Jack was more noticeable to me on a second read as well. There are a few things that are very obvious, but otherwise you have to be looking for it.

I have to confess that I was a little confused with Jack's obsession with the wound on his arm. It almost seemed as if he was trying to use his own blood to feed upon, but I don't think that would work. I was a little grossed out when he kept probing it, but I'm not a fan of punctures. The coughing up blood was a little odd to me as well, but it does provide a reason for why vampires may need to drink blood of living creatures.

Overall, I think I like the story much more on the second read. It's so darkly tragic and actually made me think of Frankenstein's monster a little.
