The Scoobies and the Newbie

Buffy fanatics Bryant Dillon and Barbra Dillon (the Scoobies) introduce Buffy-virgin Sam Rhodes (the Newbie) to Joss Whedon’s tale of vampire-slaying, demons, magic, and a universe composed entirely of shrimp.

College, The Intiative, and the addition of everybody’s favorite bleach blonde vampire as a series regular . . . the Scoobies tackle Season 4 of Buffy with newbie Sam.

So far I'm really enjoying the latest episode of The Scoobies and the Newbie. While I don't find Riley a jerk, he's definitely not my favourite character in the Buffyverse. He just seems very white-bread and bland, and I don't see him as being a great match for Buffy. Riley comes across to me as more of a long term rebound than even Parker, although Buffy showed remarkably poor judgment, like every 18 year old, with that hook up.

I'm solidly in the camp of loving "Hush" since the simplicity of an episode with almost no dialogue is amazing. The eerieness of the Gentlemen is enhanced by the silence.

Season 4 is probably my least favourite season, but it still has some great episodes. Also, the Willow/Oz break up is integral to the course of the show, and while I felt that the Willow/Tara relationship was rather sudden, I was happy that Willow wasn't left feeling miserable for the remainder of the show.

Overall, there are episodes in Season 4 I'll watch again and again, but it's not a full season I need to see regularly.
